The Kaohsiung Motor Vehicles Office (KOMV) announced that new regulations for compulsory auto liability insurance came into effect on November 30th, 2022. Previously, compulsory insurance only focused on cars and motorcycles, but now it also includes " mini electric two-wheel vehicles " in the insurance coverage. In addition to changes in coverage, the enforcement of compulsory insurance has been expanded beyond traditional inspection checkpoints. Cases of speeding, running red lights, reporting violations, and illegal parking captured by technology enforcement devices will also be checked against the insurance database. If it is found that the vehicle is uninsured, both the traffic violation and the violation of compulsory insurance will be reported and fined accordingly. When motorists are caught violating traffic regulations and receive a traffic violation notice from the police, if the vehicle is not insured, the highway supervisory authority will issue fines based on the vehicle type: micro electric two-wheelers will be fined NT$750 to NT$1,500, motorcycles will be fined NT$1,500 to NT$3,000, and cars will be fined NT$3,000 to NT$15,000.

Furthermore, the KOMV explained that under the new regulations, the penalties for uninsured motorists involved in traffic accidents have been increased. The fines range from NT$9,000 to NT$15,000 for immediate appearance in court, and from NT$12,000 to NT$32,000 for cases where appearance is overdue.

Mr. Li, the Director of the KOMV, urges all vehicle owners to not only ensure continuous coverage of compulsory auto liability insurance but also prioritize safe and law-abiding driving practices in order to reduce traffic accidents and provide the best protection on the road.
